Connecting At Risk Youth to Therapy Services: Connection is Prevention

Finding therapists, counselors, psychiatrists or Psychiatric MH Nurse Practitioners, to see your child or adolescent is a mission...some parents would say it feels like mission impossible. Especially if you're in a spot where your child is struggling you want to get help pronto - not in three months. What I hear from families is, "I've called so many places and no one is accepting new patients and no one will take my insurance."

Parents feel exhausted before it's even begun.

So I want to share a couple Colorado resources that have been pivotal for connecting at risk youth to therapy services.

- iMatterColorado: Connecting teens with six free individual therapy sessions. Parents and youth can self refer. www.imattercolorado.org

- SecondWind Fund: This organization allows parents, teachers, counselors, therapists, medical providers, nurses or other psychiatric providers to refer vulnerable youth for 12-20 free counseling sessions, with the opportunity to continue once the program sessions have been completed. This organization is focused on preventing youth suicide in Colorado and they aim to complete referrals within 48-hours and provide information to parents and providers.

At Haelen Mental Health, our Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners are able to provide psychiatric evaluation for adolescents in Colorado for medication management and supportive therapy. In situations when people are needing more specific therapy than our team can provide we will refer out to community providers and when applicable we can refer to these supportive Colorado resources. Our team is able to evaluate and provide clinical recommendations based on the specific situation following our initial 90-minute intake..

If you are in need of obtaining psychiatric evaluation for your adolescent, give our office a call at (720) 469-2845 to make an appointment.
