“My pharmacy says I can’t get the medications, the insurance says it’s…
Too early
Not covered
Not on their preferred list
"We need to do these meds first..."
When your pharmaceutical benefits fall short at the pharmacy what are your options? When your insurance doesn’t cover the medications your psychiatric providers are prescribing, are you simply out of luck?
Thankfully, there are options to help to make psychiatric medications accessible even if your insurance does not cover them:
This online pharmacy provides generic medications at discounted cost, delivered to your home. Your provider sends the prescription directly to the Cost Plus pharmacy and the company sends the medications directly to you. They do not cover controlled medications however, if you check out the formulary, there is a lot they do provide in terms of generic drugs.
- GoodRx Coupons: This option has been a help weekly to our clients; especially when the team is adjusting dosages rapidly and insurance will not cover the increased (or decreased) dosages. People can go to the website, compare options, print out the coupon, text it to your phone, or simply show it to your pharmacist. Some pharmacies participate whereas others do not, however, you can search for the medications in need and see which pharmacies offer the best discounts.
- Single Care This is another pharmaceutical coupon group, though I’ve found they might have options for psychostimulants and other high demand psychotropic meds.
This list is not exhaustive and Haelen Mental Health does not receive any compensation from these groups.
As a team of psychiatric nurse practitioners, we share these resources weekly and they have provided folks with medications when there are gaps in their plans or services. And for that, we are grateful they exist and we're glad to share the news.
